A random black hole
Hello, it’s been a good long while so an update is long overdue.

So what have I been up to that’s been taking me away from this blog I love so much?

As well as currently holding down a very demanding ‘day job’, I have been writing a long piece of fiction. I’ve got more than 40,000 words down on paper, so I’m about half way through. I’ve committed to finish it so I’m trying to devote most of my limited free time to it. Yes, it does have an astrological angle, but not overtly so.

Why fiction? It came from a long ago germ of an idea born out of a conversation with a stranger in a pub. I did quite a bit of work developing the idea at the time and then the notes just sat in a drawer for a few years. It wouldn’t lay down and rest though, it just nagged and nagged at me until finally I gave in and started writing. I’m pleased with progress so far and really enjoying immersing myself in my story and its characters. I’m finding it a welcome release from the very long, otherwise quite difficult Neptune transit I’m currently wading through - five Squares from Neptune to my Gemini-Sag Nodes between 2012 finishing Jan 2014 and three Squares from Neptune to my Gemini ASC lasting until early 2015. Perhaps a concurrent Sextile transit from Neptune to my 8th house Capricorn Sun is helping me to be imaginative and receptive.

Needless to say, my novel in progress is a dark story, but a deeply spiritual one. I find it hard to drag myself away from that imaginary world to see to practical matters such as earning enough money to pay the mortgage and so on. Neptune, you don’t make it easy, do you? Oh and I’ve been getting health checks. All clear so far thank goodness, but a good thing to do for a strong transit to the ASC, especially as I also have Saturn transiting my 6th house.

There has been a run of astrological based fiction lately.

Many of you will know that a book based on astrology, The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton, won the prestigious Man Booker Prize this year. I’ve read mixed reviews, but haven’t delved in myself yet. If any of you have read it I’d love to hear your opinion from an astrological perspective as well as from a literary one.

The wonderful Joyce Mason of The Radical Virgo blog has just launched her new novel, The Crystal Ball,a mystery featuring an intriguing crime busting duo, one of whom is an astrologer and the other a gun toting ex-FBI agent. I’ve just downloaded it as I’ve been writing this and can’t wait to get stuck in. I love Joyce’s writing style and unique tone of voice so I’m definitely in for a treat.

Also on my reading list is Ecliptic by Sara Lunardi, an intriguing urban fantasy which sees a brother and sister wake up one morning miles apart with strange tattoos of the astrological constellations on their arms. This awakens them to a dangerous mission to save the planet and all its inhabitants.

Back in the world of real astrology, I’m thrilled to see that Donna Cunningham is back with her new book The Stellium Handbook, another essential for my reading list.

Two Doctors for the price of one
Now, I swing back into fantasy again (Neptune transit, remember?) to show you a chart quickly. If you didn’t know it was the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who last night, then what planet are you on?

The first ever episode was entitled An Adventure in Space and Time. The original time travelling Doctor was played by William Hartnell as an older authoritarian figure, a Time Lord. How fitting to see Saturn in Aquarius on the MC for the chart of the show’s first broadcast? It’s also a good symbol for the longevity of this much loved sci-fi show. A Sun-Mercury-Venus-Mars stellium in Sagittarius is also perfect for the galaxy trotting adventurer and his companion, perfect for broadening one’s horizons, for fostering a fascination with alien races and for seeing the (much) bigger picture. And in the 6th house, we are reminded that Doctor Who’s ultimate mission is to alleviate the suffering of mankind, to deliver hope. Venus on the DC is also great for popularity. See also the Moon in Aquarius close to the MC and Saturn? The original Doctor Who was a progressive production indeed. It was produced by Verity Lambert who at the time was the only female producer at the BBC and directed by Waris Hussein, its first Indian-born director.

Now a brief admin update: I have taken down www.mandilockley.com for now. It pretty much became redundant once I started this blog and now I’m branching out into fiction I need to rethink my strategy. I’m sure there will be a shiny new website at some point, but it will be a while yet and you’ll be the first to hear. In the meantime if you want to get in touch: mandi_lockley@hotmail.com

Astro-Detective Fiction Author Tells All!

I'm delighted to present this guest post from the wonderful Joyce Mason, talented author and astrologer and all round good soul. Enjoy her post and I hope it encourages you to read her inspiring and fun new mystery novel, The Crystal Ball.

In November 2013, Mandi Lockley was kind enough to mention my new novel, The Crystal Ball, in her info-rich post, Astrology, Fiction and The Doctor(s).Since then, I’ve discovered a couple of other fascinating articles on the topic of astrology and metaphysics in fiction. I’d like to share them with you and what I’ve learned from them.

Mandi offered me a chance to give the author’s perspective, as I find myself surprised and delighted to be part of an evolving new literary subgenre. Astrologer Armand Diaz calls it Astro-detective fiction. From behind the scenes, I thought you might enjoy learning how this dual genre is evolving for me, and how others are starting to see it. Not only does it have the potential to bring those of us who are “into” astrology a reading experience that fits our interests; Astro-detective books also sow the seeds for bringing astrology more into the mainstream, drawing in those who like the mystery half of ”Astro-detective.”

Composite Like Chiron

It’s no surprise for a Chironophile (Chiron has been my astrological specialty since I started my practice in 1988): The Crystal Ballis a composite genre like the centaur of mythology after which the planetary body is named. In the official BISAC categories all authors have to choose before publication to help make it easier for readers to find their books, I sorted The Crystal Ball into Mystery and Visionary/Metaphysical Fiction.

If you’re an avid reader and want to have some fun, take a look at some of the many genre possibilities and Google their definitions. Since I have written more astrology than fiction up to now, I’m still learning the nuances of subgenres. For instance, I used to think I wrote “cozy mystery” because of my more humorous and less gory take on crime, often writing pieces where no murder takes place at all. (A master of the no-murder mystery is Alexander McCall Smith.) However, after scrutinizing the pure definition, I find myself, Uranian as usual, not quite fitting the mold. The Crystal Ball doesn’t take place in a small town (San Francisco), there’s some realistic, though no gratuitous swearing (most cozies are pretty Puritanical about language), and we actually get an opening glimpse of a sex scene, though most of it is left to the reader’s imagination. (Not that the cozy genre is prudish, but as the Cozy Mystery List article linked above says, “Sex, if there is any, is always behind closed doors.” Flunked that one.)

Astrology is Uranian, and in my opinion, Chironic. In mythology, Chiron is often cited as the first astrologer. This speaks to astrology’s healing potential.

Chiron and The Crystal Ball

I hinted there would be backstory, and there is. Writers are always advised to write what they know. I originally wrote The Crystal Ball, trying to resolve a personal relationship that was a lot at core like Micki’s and Curt’s in the novel. Of course, Micki and Curt developed into their own unique characters.

Micki Michaels is an astrologer and head of a longevity organization celebrating its Silver Anniversary at a New Year’s Eve gala called the Crystal Ball. Curt Stern is an ex-FBI agent. He has been in and out of her life, and is clearly her one true love. Now retired, he has joined her in San Francisco to see if they can, finally, make it work. A threatening extortionist gives them an opportunity to combine their hot chemistry into a crime-busting Odd Couple, as they have to protect their loved ones and everyone at the Crystal Ball from a potential kidnapping—and possibly worse.

Micki and Curt have a strong magnetism that is the definition of Plutonian. Through them, I attempt to tackle the age-old dilemma: Opposites attract but can they live together? With creativity and Micki’s obvious facility with the Chiron archetype, we see the beginnings of a composite relationship that tests itself in an emergency. If they succeed, they’ll save the day.

Micki’s other Chironic characteristics are numerous. A few of examples of her ease with blending old and new, reflecting Chiron’s orbit between Saturn and Uranus—a Chironic trademark: she lives in a Victorian house, built in 1900, dotted with both antiques and futuristic gismos like a custom-designed, talking clock and a robo-maid. Chiron is also the “patron saint” of her longevity organization, the Immortalists on Planet Earth Association or IOPEA (pronounced eye-OH-pea-uh).

Mainstreaming Takes Aries and Libra--and Chiron in Pisces

I wasn’t focused on the idea that my book could help me be an ambassador for astrology until it was nearly in print. While confessing that I don’t have a single planet in Aries but several in Libra, publishing this book has taught me how sometimes, you have to just do it—get it out there and be an Aries pioneer. Knowing what you’re doing will follow, at least the part you couldn’t figure out because it was subconscious. Once it gets from your inside to the outside, it’s clearer to you, and others can respond for even more enlightenment (the Libra part).

One of the most important things Armand Diaz points out in his article, reacting to mine and several other Astro-detective novels, is that mystery readers are used to being walked through highly technical topics and learning through the author the essentials for understanding the story. The love of mystery makes the reader willing to learn. What an opportunity for astrologers to teach astrology!

Since many Astro-civilians are to astrology what Muggles are to magic in the Harry Potter books, I can’t help but want to urge members of the astrological community to both support this developing genre and other types of Astro-fiction. And if you write, consider weaving astrology into your works.

I struggled for years with feedback from the traditional literary community that fiction featuring an astrologer would appeal only to a narrow audience.  It took putting it out there, and Armand’s point about mystery being a traditional “teaching institution,” for me to see that the slogan from the movie Field of Dreams, slightly modified, applies here: If you write it, they will come.

In another article I read recently, PJ Swanwick says We Need to Promote Spiritual/Visionary Fiction, another evolving genre. Imagine: healing through the pleasure of reading. The Crystal Ball promotes more than astrology. It’s a mixed bag of practical metaphysics with themes of longevity, health, and the Chironic quest for wholeness—in addition to the relationship issues so central to it.

It’s time for all of us to start voting with our book purchases—add TV and films—to create the kind of healing through the arts that Chiron in Pisces is all about. Join the Literary Evolution!

Chiron in Pisces: Water Over Rocks (from the Archives)

With Chiron in Pisces just Retrograde (stationing half a degree from my natal Chiron - yes there were tears), here's one from the archives that's well worth revisiting...

With Chiron moving into Pisces, I have been planing to write a post about Chiron for some days now, but felt blocked, despite preparing pages and pages of notes.

The key word most of us associate with Chiron is healing and it’s very easy to predict that in Pisces, Chiron’s healing themes comes to the foremost, presenting us with a great opportunity for healing on a collective and personal level.

But Chiron, Pisces and life just isn’t as simple as that, so this morning I decided to meditate on some of the themes of Chiron in Pisces and a very interesting image came to me, an image of crystal clear water running over rocky ground, on the face of it a calm, restful image.

However, I have also been thinking about the meaning of discomfort these past few days and I had an ‘aha’ moment which brought these two ideas together. You see, for all its themes of healing, Chiron is also an uncomfortable energy. In the myth, Chiron was wounded. Only able to heal himself partially, he was fated to walk his path in perpetual discomfort. Similarly, that beautiful clear water I dreamed up in my meditation will certainly cleanse our feet, but at the same time, the rocks the water runs over will always remain uncomfortable to walk across, despite the fact that the water will cleanse the rocks and over time, smooth away their sharper edges.

In this life, it is through our experience of discomfort and through the (physical, emotional, psychological or spiritual) wounding that causes the discomfort in the first place, that we are compelled to learn. Along the way, we discover that healing, total healing, in the sense of ‘becoming whole’, is perhaps not totally possible in just a single earthly incarnation, but it is this whole-making that we are ultimately seeking, on a soul level. So, as we walk across life’s rocky path, like Chiron, we carry our wounds with us, seeking comfort from the healing waters where we can. Then, like Chiron we can eventually learn how to use the knowledge we learn from carrying our own pain, to help others to carry their own.

However, Chiron also reminds us that real healing must be sought and asked for, if the healing process is to really be felt on a deeper, soul level. Simply giving healing to another, without them asking for it, diverts them from their healing journey, robbing them of their opportunity to learn from the discomfort of walking over the rocks. Similarly, if we simply take from someone else a metaphorical ‘magical pill’ that takes away all our pain, this denies us our own lesson. We must learn to feel the discomfort of the pain, but at the same time we must learn to understand that even in pain, we do not have to suffer unnecessarily - WE CAN ASK FOR HELP. Asking for help is a truly humbling experience and is the first step on the journey through the healing waters and across the rocky ground that lies beneath. This I feel, is the key to the healing energy of Chiron as it travels through the sign of Pisces.

Jupiter in Leo - Internationalism & Iraq

Jupiter's in Leo from July 16th through August 11th 2015.
What's highlighted when the planet of growth, expansion, luck, hope, optimism and expanded horizons enters the proud, stubborn, loyal, generous, kingly sign of the lion?

Hype; exaggeration; melodrama; idealism; confidence; fixed viewpoints; spotlight on authority (especially after Saturn in Scorpio comes out of Retrograde on July 20th). It’s also great for creative expression and acts of immense generosity, so long as there's an appreciative audience.
Want some clues to how Jupiter in Leo might affect you? Look to the House Jupiter in Leo travels through in your chart (get your free chart at alabe.com) and any planets or angles it hits along the way. And think back to the last time Jupiter was in Leo - August 2002 through August 2003. What happened?

Jupiter in Leo is also about fixed ideas around wisdom and knowledge; religious faith (including fanaticism); morals and ethics; law and justice.

It also puts a spotlight on internationalism and globalism. See these themes reflected in events from Jupiter’s last transit through Leo:
·       Switzerland, traditionally a neutral country and Timor-Leste (East Timor) join the United Nations.

·       NATO invites Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia to become members.

·       The enlargement of the European Union with the announcement that Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia will become members

·       The International Criminal Court held its inaugural session in The Hague.
Iraq will be a country to watch closely while Jupiter is in Leo.

Jupiter’s last transit through Leo (August 2002 throughAugust 2003) marked the period of the Iraq disarmament crisis and the subsequent Iraq War.

During this transit, Jupiter made three hits to Iraq's natal Uranus at 10 degrees Leo in the 1st House, between Sept 02 and May 03. In Mundane (the astrology of countries and leaders), the 1st House signifies the country and its people as a whole, its ego and national identity.
Additionally, Jupiter in Leo Squared Iraq's Neptune at 2 Scorpio in the 4th House in August 2002. The 4th represents the land a country occupies, its regular people (vs. its elite) and politically, the opposition to the ruling regime.

Here's a timeline of events:
·         In August,a group of Iraqis opposed to the regime of Saddam Hussein took over the Iraqi Embassy in Berlin for five hours before releasing their hostages and surrendering.

·         In November, The United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a resolution, forcing Saddam Hussein to disarm or face "serious consequence." Iraq agreed to the terms and the UN sent in its weapons inspectors

·         In Feb 2003, an estimated eleven million people around the world took to the streets to protest against the looming war with Iraq, followed by the largest coordinated worldwide vigil in March as part of the global protests against an Iraq war (that internationalism theme again). British Cabinet Minister Robin Cook resigned from government over plans for the war with Iraq.

·         In March, Iraq was invaded by an American and British led coalition,  without United Nations support and in defiance of world opinion. Shortly afterwards, The Arab League voted 21-1 in favor of a resolution demanding the immediate and unconditional removal of U.S. and British soldiers from Iraq.

·         In April Baghdad, fell to U.S. forces.

·         In early May, President George W. Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended.

·         In July, the US military attacked a compound in Iraq, killing Saddam Hussein's sons.

·         It was in December of 2003, with Jupiter moved into Virgo, that Bush announced thecapture of Saddam Hussein.
This is all important because Jupiter in Leo is about to hit those same points in Iraq’s chart again and already Iraq is in the news.

The toppling of Saddam Hussain’s government in 2003 marked the start of years of violent conflict with different groups competing for power. This is now coming dramatically and violently to a head, with current events directly linked to those of the early 00's. This year has seen the ascendancy of Sunni rebels led by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) with reports that thousands have fled amid reports of atrocities and Iran and the US have offered their assistance.

We can also expect new questions to be asked and new doubts raised over what happened back then, particularly around the UK's involvement. The 1801 UK chart has Jupiter in early Leo and Saturn later in Leo, so we are looking at a Jupiter return for the UK this month, but will possibly see the country's luck turn when Jupiter hits the UK's Saturn in around a year's time (it almost hits it at the end of this year before Jupiter turns backwards - so we will no doubt get a taster then). I wouldn't be surprised to see talk of British troops going back into Iraq before this year is out. Certainly there will be a new sense of purpose in the UK generally.

The US Sibley chart has the North Node (destiny/lessons/the mission/key relationships/significant meetings) at 6 Leo in the 8th House (financial relations with foreign countries). Jupiter will hit that point in August this year. Jupiter will also Conjunct Obama's Leo planets - Mercury and Sun in the 6th  (national services including the army and the navy) and the Uranus and North Node in the 7th (foreign affairs, relations with other countries, open enemies) and the DC in Leo. This is of course the first time Jupiter has crossed those planets and points since he has been in office, so these transits will be interesting to observe.
The 2014 transit timings for Iraq are as follows:

Jupiter in Leo, travelling through Iraq's 1st House squares Iraq’s 4th House Neptune in late July (as stated, the 4th represents the land a country occupies, its regular people and the opposition to the ruling regime)

In September, Jupiter conjuncts the 1st House Uranus (which describes, along with Cancer rising and Mercury in the 1st, the country and its people as a whole, its ego and national identity).

Iraq is also taking a battering from the Uranus-Pluto squares, with Uranus currently hovering around the MC (upset of the status quo, rebellion, overthrow of the government etc).

The Iraq chart is below - click to enlarge

Of course, Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction were never found and it’s now widely accepted that the dossier on Iraq’s weapons capability - used as justification for the 2003 invasion - was at best ‘sexed up’, at worst a lie. Google Iraq September Dossier to read more. It’s of note that the dossier was published just after transiting Jupiter in Leo squared Iraq’s Neptune. As Jupiter in Leo prepares to square its Neptune again, it would be wise to be wary of what we’re told about the situation in Iraq.

Finally, a couple of other fascinating events from when Jupiter was last in Leo:
The Human Genome Project was completed with 99% of the human genome sequenced to an accuracy of 99.99%.

In August 2003, the highest temperature ever was recorded in the UK - 38.5°C (101.3°F) in Kent, the first time the UK has recorded a temperature over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Jupiter in Leo - The Iraq Connection

$

Jupiter in Leo is an important trigger, a crucial point in the Jupiter cycle for the modern history of Iraq and a transit to watch closely.

Iraq is awash with Lion symbolism. The Desert Lion (Shakir Wahiyib, the public face of Islamic State); The Lion of Babylon (Iraqi tank used during the 1991 War); the other Lion of Babylon (representing the King of Babylon and depicted at the Ishtar Gate to the ancient city, now part of Iraq) and of course, the live lions Saddam Hussein kept at his palace.

Also, it seems that Jupiter's transit of Leo is incredibly relevant to modern day Iraq. This is an expansion of my post of early July written just as Jupiter was moving into Leo, with further insights to offer, more dots to connect.

When in Leo, once every 12 years, Jupiter transits through Iraq's first house (representing the country as a whole and its leaders, its identity, its ego and how it wants to be perceived by the world), making conjunctions to its Mercury and Uranus conjunction as it goes, before moving into the 2nd house (its assets and values), eventually meeting Pluto at zero of Virgo. Pluto in this case perhaps signifying upheaval, destruction, oil as an asset and regeneration after war.

Iraq - click to enlarge

Iraq's leaders, national identity, assets, sense of national pride, ideologies and values - including spiritual ideologies and values - are therefore highlighted and challenged by this transit.

Here's the potted history, all of it directly connected to what's happening today:

Jupiter was in Leo from mid-August 1990 until September 1991.

This was the period of the 1st Iraq War.

It was waged by coalition forces from 34 UN-led nations in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait in early August 1990. The conflict began with an aerial bombardment on 17 January 1991, followed by a ground assault on 24 February. A United Nations Security Council Resolution in April 1991 established formal cease-fire terms.
The controversies over enforcing this (the disarmament crisis and alleged weapons of mass destruction) and subsequent resolutions led directly to another war 12 years later - when Jupiter next returned to Leo.

Jupiter’s next transit through Leo was August 2002 through August 2003.

This was the period of the Iraq disarmament crisis and the 2nd Iraq War.

During this transit, Jupiter made three hits to Iraq's natal Uranus at 10 degrees Leo in the 1st House, between Sept 02 and May 03. Additionally, Jupiter in Leo Squared Iraq's Neptune at 2 Scorpio in the 4th House in August 2002. The 4th represents the land a country occupies, its regular people (vs. its elite) and politically, the opposition to the ruling regime. Of course, these same planets would have been hit during the previous transit in the early 90's.

Here's a timeline of events for the 2nd Iraq War:

·         It was in December of 2003, with Jupiter moved into Virgo and conjunct Iraq's Pluto, that Bush announced thecapture of Saddam Hussein.

This is all important because Jupiter in Leo is hitting those same points in Iraq’s chart again

The toppling of Saddam Hussein’s government in 2003 marked the start of years of violent conflict with different groups competing for power. This is now coming dramatically and violently to a head, with current events directly linked to those of the early 90's and 00's.

When I wrote my first post on Iraq over a month ago, Iraq was at the top of the world news, with concerns over the ascent of Sunni rebels led by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) now known as Islamic State, with reports that thousands had fled the ensuing atrocities, with Iran and the US offering their assistance, but with the UK still on the fence.

Now, of course, the US have launched air strikes in support of the Kurdish militia and as predicted the UK government have told us that military involvement is now inevitable, but so far have limited it to humanitarian aid and what is set to be a prolonged Royal Air Force reconnaissance mission. The Prime Minister has ruled out 'boots on the ground' but has not ruled out other intervention including arming the Kurds. The focus, he says, is on protecting the UK from a terrorist threat. Perhaps this reticence for sending in the army to fight is a lesson learned from the political suicide committed by former Prime Minister Tony Blair, when he declared war on Iraq in 2003 without the support of the UN or the majority of UK citizens.

Whatever occurs next, the direct connections between now and events in Iraq spanning back over the last 24 years and earlier need to be considered. Already, nobody can argue that the so called War on Terror that led to the 2003 Iraq War didn't directly radicalize certain Islamic factions.

The 1801 UK chart has Jupiter in early Leo and Saturn later in Leo, so the country has just had a Jupiter return. While a UK presence will be in Iraq in some form, the full consequences or ramifications will only be felt once transiting Jupiter hits the UK's Saturn in around a year's time. At the same time, Jupiter hits Iraq's Pluto. We can expect to see a shift in power, a moving around of assets, rebuilding, rehabilitation, restoration, perhaps a new government. But at what human cost?

The US Sibley chart has the North Node (destiny/lessons/the mission/key relationships/significant meetings) at 6 Leo in the 8th House (financial relations with foreign countries). Jupiter has now hit that point.

Jupiter will also Conjunct Barack Obama's Leo planets - it has already crossed Mercury (the time for talking is over) and is heading for his Sun in the 6th  (national services including the army and the navy) and the Uranus and North Node in the 7th (foreign affairs, relations with other countries, open enemies) and the DC in Leo. This is of course the first time Jupiter has crossed those planets and points since he has been in office, so these transits will be interesting to observe.

Note also that George Bush Snr. (President during the 1991 Iraq War) has Leo rising with a 12 house North Node and Neptune in Leo.

George W. Bush  (President during the 2003 War) shares his father's Leo Ascendant, with Mercury, Venus and Pluto in Leo. His 'partner in crime' was British PM Tony Blair. Blair has the South Node in Leo and the generational Pluto in Leo.

The connections between Bush and Blair and the US and Iraq charts are remarkable - Blair's South Node is conjunct the USA's North Node and sits on Bush's Ascendant. Bush's Mercury and Pluto in Leo are conjunct Iraq's Uranus and Blair's Moon in Aquarius opposes all of them. Tangled destinies indeed and there are plenty more connections, but time and space is short. See quad-chart below (click to enlarge).

Interesting also that Obama's Leo points and planets fall in the opposite part of the chart to those of the two Bush Presidents. What does this suggest? That Obama has less control over this new war than the Bush's did in previous wars? That it's a situation he's being forced to deal with rather than a situation he's created? For sure, it's part of his destiny as President to face a foreign enemy (North Node in the 7th).

For his part, the UK's Prime Minister, David Cameron, has Moon conjunct Jupiter in early Leo (a Jupiter return for him as it is for Iraq) and Mars in Leo in the 11th House.

This all suggests that the recent history of Iraq and its future is closely tied to Western powers and their leaders and of course the facts if you care to look into them bear this out.

Certainly, there are many other astrological factors and planetary cycles to be considered, but one thing is certain:

Jupiter in Leo is an important trigger, a key point in Jupiter's cycle for the modern history of Iraq and a transit to watch closely.

The 2014 transit timings for Iraq are as follows:
Jupiter in Leo, travelling through Iraq's 1st House squared Iraq’s 4th House Neptune in late July. The 4th representing the land a country occupies, its regular people and the opposition to the ruling regime - with ISIS (now known as Islamic State) having already taken vast swathes of land, forcing many to flee or be brutally killed.

In September, Jupiter conjuncts the Uranus (rebellion, progressive tendencies, but often also the totalitarian and autocratic) in the 1st House (which describes, along with Iraq's Cancer rising and Mercury in the 1st, the country and its people as a whole, its ego and national identity).

Iraq is also taking a battering from the Uranus-Pluto squares, with Uranus currently hovering around the MC (upset of the status quo, rebellion, overthrow of the government etc).

Already, rumours are circulating around the internet, said to come from NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, that the mysterious leader of Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is a Mossad trained operative, real name Simon Elliot or Elliot Shimon.

Are we destined to keep going around and around dealing with new incarnations of the same problem until the karmic lesson, whatever that is, is learned? A cycle of rinse and repeat, with human lives the cost?

The 7 Year Itch

So my beloved and I have just enjoyed our seventh wedding anniversary. To celebrate, we went to see one of our favourite bands and the occasion was marked with a couple of intriguing coincidences.

My husband discovered that a couple of his friends - a couple - were attending the gig so we arranged to meet for a drink beforehand and as soon as they walked through the door I realised I hadn’t seen one of them since our wedding. Then, when we arrived at the venue, I spotted a guy at the back of the room on his own looking a bit out of place. I looked and then I looked again. It was who I thought it was; the ex of one of my husband’s relatives. And when was the last time we saw him? At our wedding of course! The gig wasn’t his thing; he was only there to help his friend who was doing the lights for the show. He was thrilled to see us and vice versa.
As I’m the type who looks for meaning in these things and in signs and symbols in general – I wouldn’t be into astrology if I didn’t – I got to thinking about what this strange synchronicity means.
As so often happens with me, my train of thought led me to the planet Saturn. Bear with me, this will make sense…
You see, the theory is that after around seven years a relationship can hit a point of crisis or dissatisfaction or even hit the rocks completely. It’s known as the seven year itch and it’s a testing time when we’re invited to take stock and decide whether another seven years is a viable prospect. We might consider what restraints and responsibilities our partnership demands and ask if these are balanced out by commitment and security and the promise of longer term rewards. More than anything, it’s a time to get real about our relationship.
The description above brims with Saturn imagery: testing time; getting real; restraints, commitment and responsibilities; hitting the rocks (Saturn rules rocks literally) and if you don’t know already, you’ve probably guessed that the Saturn cycle hits a hotspot once every seven years or thereabouts.
Using a marriage as an example, the date of the wedding is where the foundations are laid. Ground zero. After seven years, transiting Saturn has travelled three zodiac signs and makes its first Square aspect to Saturn’s placement in the marriage chart. The ‘rules’ of the relationship have been laid down over the preceding seven years and at the Square the urge may be to test the relationship’s boundaries, to challenge the status quo, to push  back against the duties and constraints the marriage demands. We might ask, does this relationship allow me to express my authentic self? Some may even stray (that seven year itch cliché) but the consequences of what we do, of the decisions we’ve made to date, will need to be faced and fresh decisions reached and a new path forged.
It can also be a positive time of course. Just because Saturn isn’t all jolly bells and whistles, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t bestow deserved rewards from time to time. That seven year point, the Saturn Square, is a good opportunity to take stock of the relationship, to plan, together, for the next seven years. What do you both want? Do your goals and aspirations synchronise? Where do compromises need to be made? It’s probably fair to say that avoiding issues at this time won’t make them go away, so you may as well face them.
I should say here that my own marriage is happy. We are using this time to think about how far we’ve come, to celebrate that and then pack for wherever it is we’re going next. Together.
But what of those chance meetings with the two people I hadn’t seen since our wedding? Well the seven year cycle fits for them too. You see, the couple we met in the pub had only just got together when my husband and I married and now they are in a committed relationship. As for the other guy, his relationship with my husband’s relative broke up shortly after our wedding. Now, seven years on, he’s a parent and his ex is very happily married to someone else and about to become a parent for the first time.
So, time marches on and we get older and wiser and we take on more commitment and responsibility, but for any heartache along the way, oh what joy and love life also brings.
With love,

Mandi

The Descent: A Moon-Pluto Story

[Warning: contains spoilers] Watching the British horror movie The Descent recently, I was struck by just how perfect a metaphor for the Moon-Pluto dynamic this movie is. The story line goes like this: the lead character, Sarah (played by actress Shauna Macdonald), is grieving for her husband and most particularly for her young daughter. Both died violently after their car was struck by a truck on the way back from a white water rafting trip Sarah took with four female friends. A year later, as part of her healing process, Sarah travels to America’s Appalachian mountains to meet up again with the friends from the rafting trip, including Juno (played by Natalie Mendoza). A sixth woman joins them, the fearless Holly (played by Nora-Jane Noone). The women embark on a caving expedition in a remote part of the national park, but from the start there is tension between Sarah and Juno, who haven’t seen each other since the fatal accident. The implication is that something had been going on between Juno and Sarah’s late husband. (1)

Already, strong Pluto themes are creeping into the movie: the violent deaths; the suggestion of betrayal; the caving trip; the raw feelings and the simmering grief, not just of Sarah, but of all the women, who find themselves emotionally bound together by the tragedy of Sarah’s family, reflecting the intense, often dark relationships with women that are typically experienced by those with strong Moon-Pluto natal or moving aspects.

Censorship in Saturn-Pluto Times

I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

The above quote, attributed to 17th Century Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire, reminds us that freedom of speech and the attempt to suppress it – censorship - is an issue that spans back centuries, probably ever since humans first felt the urge to share their opinions and push the boundaries of their creative expression.

I was reminded that censorship is well and truly still with us when I attended FrightFest, a festival showcasing new fantasy and horror films, which takes place every August at the Empire Leicester Square in central London.

FrightFest is in its 11th year and the 2010 edition was the first time that official bodies have ever queried any of the titles in the festival’s line up. Two films were affected, the remade I Spit On Your Grave and the controversial A Serbian Film. Both were due to be shown as unedited, unrated versions, the norm for this type of film festival. However, Westminster Council, under whose jurisdiction the Empire Leicester Square falls, queried the content of both movies and stipulated that they be rated and passed by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) before they would allow them to be shown.

Echoing this censorship theme was the airing at FrightFest of new documentary Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship & Videotape, which looks at the UK government and media reaction to the widespread, unregulated distribution of so-called ‘video nasty’ movies in the early 1980’s.

The censorship debate at this year’s festival seems very fitting, astrologically speaking, when you consider that the final exact alignment of the current Saturn-Pluto squares that begun in late 2009, occurred just four days before the start of the event.

Adventures with Secondary Progressed Moon in Sagittarius

I celebrated my Secondary Progressed Moon moving into Sagittarius (and conjoining my Natal South Node on the 7thHouse cusp) with an adventure holiday in Borneo. What a wild ride!

I’m a cautious Capricorn but found myself challenged by all sorts of daring activities I never thought I would have the guts to do.

The air is full of mayfly, flying upstream to lay their eggs
Trekking uphill on narrow slippery paths through wild jungles full of angry fire ants, hungry leeches and (bonus) truly wild orangutan; wading up to my chest through rivers fully clothed; cooling off in waterfalls hidden deep in the forest; overcoming my fear of fast water by riding down rapids with nothing but a lifejacket beneath me; wading into the south china sea with nothing but the full moon to light the way, to be charmed by the dinoflagellate 'sea sparkle'; with jelly legs, shuffling over narrow bridges open to the water beneath, trying to remember that Capricorns are supposed to be sure-footed as I went.

Spot the orangutan
In just two short weeks, I learned a lot about myself – I should push myself much more than I do - and a lot about different cultures, having stayed with three different tribes along the way, amazing people. Every other word I uttered was awesome, brilliant, wow.

SP Moon in Sag is all about adventure of course, a release from the constrained emotional experience of SP Moon in Scorpio. It’s about expansion and growth, having fun, learning new things, experiencing freedom and independence and widening horizons through far flung travel and/or intellectual pursuits.

The last time my SP Moon was in Sag I was at University, another period of my life that was full of wonder and no less than life changing. It moved into Capricorn perfectly timed to the end of the last term and the start of my first job. A sobering time that was indeed!

A longhouse, our home for five days. The only way to get there is via a 90 minute ride on a traditional longboat
For my next adventures – a music festival in a medieval castle in Poland this July and early next year (by which time I will be 50 - eek!) my first ever skiing trip. Bring it on!

The Secondary Progressed Moon takes around 27-28 years to travel around the natal chart, spending two and a half years in each sign. The sign it’s in symbolises the underlying emotional current for that period and the House(s) it travels through show the area of life that will be emphasised.

How was Saturn in the intense, inscrutable and controlled sign of Scorpio for you?

Saturn may have moved into Sagittarius in December last year, but it's not through with Scorpio yet. Today (June 16) it travelled back into Scorpio, where it will remain until September 19.

To celebrate (or commiserate) Saturn's last stubborn stand in the sign of the Scorpion, my ebook   Saturn in Scorpio: Your Guide Through The Dark - is discounted on Amazon to $0.99 or £0.99 (or the equivalent in your currency).

Why bother when Saturn's so close to the end of its two and a half years in Scorpio?

Here are a few good reasons:
  1. With 100 packed pages of information (including a bonus and timeless chapter on the Secondary Progressed Moon), it's an absolute bargain!
  2. If you have planets or points at 28 or 29 degrees of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) you are still in the midst of a significant Saturn transit and this book can help you successfully navigate its cold and deep waters and tap into its healing and transformative potential.
  3. Even if your Saturn in Scorpio transit is over, it could help you to review the themes and events of your transit and put them into some perspective, maybe even help you digest some of those Saturnian lessons.
  4. You can revise all the major themes of Saturn in Scorpio which are explored in-depth including issues of safety, fear and control; sex and intimacy; the power of love; rejection, anger, vengeance and forgiveness; the power of the unconscious and money, debt and taxes etc. and find out what I got right and what I missed!!!
What readers said:

"Just to tell you how much I am enjoying your e-book ‘Saturn in Scorpio: Your Guide Through The Dark’. Congratulations for the excellent, informative, enlightening, deep book. It is worth every cent." ME via Facebook

"I’ve purchased this e-book and can recommend it very highly. She’s an accessible writer. I’ve gone though it forwards and back, and re-read many passages over again, and each time I gather a bit more. It’s great to find a writer you can feel like quoting." EJR, online
"I finished reading it, loved it, and will be re-reading it to my other half who has his Saturn return looming." LVL via Facebook

"I find it to be a wonderful guide...the descriptions of the Scorpio and Saturn themes are covered in an orderly fashion and Mandi Lockley offers not just some examples on how they may or may not manifest, but she also offers ways in which to work with these themes in a positive, more conscious manner. Songs for a Saturn Transit

Happy 2016. I saw in the New Year with my husband and a bunch of good friends and because they are metal fans, there were Lemmy Christmas cards, vintage Motörhead t-shirts and just before midnight our host shared a bottle of Motörhead Shiraz he'd been saving for a special occasion. We head-banged to Ace of Spades although perhaps not as violently as we might have done 20 years ago.

This made me remember something I wrote in 2010 - Sounds for a Saturn Transit - so I've reposted it below not only because it features the music of Mr Ian (Lemmy) Kilmister and his band, but also because it provides a little music therapy for those of you having, or looking forward to, a Saturn transit this year.

One, two, three, let's go....

Music therapy is a recognised and widely used therapeutic technique, which uses sound, dance and movement to aid physical, emotional and mental health.
In fact, as early as the 17th century it was said that music was critical in the treatment of melancholy, that very Saturnian state of mind that "goes and comes upon every small occasion of sorrow, need, sickness, trouble, fear, grief, passion...which causes anguish, dulness, heaviness and vexation of spirit, any ways opposite to pleasure, mirth, joy, delight"*.

And haven't most of us used music as a form of self-therapy? I mean who of you doesn't have a personal soundtrack to your life, for the best of times and for the worst? Remember being a broken-hearted, put upon, fed up, stressed-out teenager hiding in your room, listening to some angry rocking tracks and mournful dirges to make yourself feel better? Perhaps you were having a Saturn transit at the time?

Most of us still still use music as catharsis, even if we don't admit it, so in that spirit, here are some musical gems especially selected to indulge a Saturn transit.

"You win some, lose some, it's - all - the same to me"
Plug in your best air guitar and shout along, very loudly. Lead singer Lemmy was a Christmas Capricorn with a strong Saturn signature in his chart, so he knew just how you feel!

Also check out Capricornby Motorhead "When I was young I was already old, My Life, my heart, black night, dark star, Capricorn."

"A song in which to weep, While we rock ourselves to sleep"
Nick Cave's trademark hybrid of lyrical blues, gospel, rock, and arty post-punk, results in a dark, challenging sound, full of emotional intensity, but somehow lifting. A talented song-writer, singer and author, Cave expresses his natal Mercury square Saturn perfectly, helped along by creative quintiles from Saturn to his Sun and Mars in Virgo.

"And I'm here to remind you, Of the mess you left when you went away"
Alanis Morissette's harsh and angry break up song has helped many a wronged woman through the worst. It's even rumoured that she wrote it about one of her own relationships! Like Cave (above), Morissette is also a Mercury-Saturn native, hers an exact conjunction in super-sensitive Cancer. [Warning: explicit lyrics]

"I try to laugh about it, Hiding the tears in my eyes"
This tune from post-punk, goth-pop band The Cure is a tale of a man who desperately wants to get his lost love back, but instead of showing how he really feels and asking for forgiveness, he hides his emotions, because boys don't cry, do they? An expression of singer-songwriter Robert Smith's Mercury-Mars-Saturn T-square perhaps?

"How does it feel?"
Dylan's classic, written in 1965, was revolutionary and controversial in its day and it's gone on to become one of the most influential tracks of all time. It's easy to see how Dylan's natal stellium of Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus in his creative 5th house, are reflected in his music, with its Saturn-Uranus themes of protest and rebellion against tradition.

"Living just to find emotion, Hiding somewhere in the night"

If Dylan's classic symbolises Saturn-Uranus, then rock band Journey's rousing anthem was a great track for the [2010] Saturn-Pluto square. Originally a minor hit at the start of the current Saturn-Pluto cycle in '81/'82 it suddenly became a meteoric hit during [the most recent] Saturn-Pluto square, thanks to covers on the X-Factor and on popular TV show Glee.

Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age
No collection of Saturnine music would be complete without the Saturn movement from Gustav Holst's The Planets. Of all the seven movements, Saturn was said to be Holst's personal favourite. Enjoy the steady, serene, deliberate sound of stoicism.

What are your sounds for a Saturn transit?

Ziggy Stardust - Thank You Very Much, Bye Bye, We Love You

$

0

A sad day, hearing the news of the passing of David Bowie, an otherworldly genius whose magic was that he was so relatable, so down to earth, yet so not of the earth.
It makes sense that David Bowie’s most famous alter-ego, Ziggy Stardust, was a futuristic alien on a humanitarian mission to earth.
It was January 29th 1972 when Bowie and his band took to the stage in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire for a warm up gig for the ’72-’73 Ziggy Stardust Tour. The chart for that concert* has transiting Sun exactly conjunct Bowie’s Ascendant at 9 Aquarius, symbolising recognition, praise, and the ego projecting brightly out into the world through innovative, unconventional Aquarius.

Although Bowie had not yet fully embraced the bisexual alien rock superstar with a message of hope for a dying human race - all the elements were in place. The spiky red hair, the futuristic, androgynous costumes and the ambiguious sexuality**

A Starman was born.

Most of the songs on the Ziggy Stardust album were recorded when Bowie had transiting Neptune Conjunct his natal Venus, a transit for beauty, fantasy, creativity and illusion and by the time of the tour, when the songs were made public, Neptune had moved to his MC. These transits reflect the album’s themes of salvation, soul love and the struggle to hold onto the dream.

However, when Neptune had finished with his MC, it was time for the illusion to end. Bowie’s natal Moon-Saturn-Pluto conjunction in Leo which straddles his Descendent, foreshadows Ziggy’s very public demise and indeed, by the time Bowie killed Ziggy off on stage in July ’73, shocking fans and bandmates alike, transiting Jupiter had crossed his ASC and was making a series of Oppositions to his natal Moon and Saturn, suggesting that keeping up the public persona of Ziggy had become frustrating, hard work and emotionally draining and explaining his need to get out of the rut and expand his horizons.

Transiting Uranus’ Squares to natal Mars and Sun were over by Autumn ‘72, but they certainly suggest that his desire to kill off his alter ego was not the spur of the moment decision it appeared to be. Transiting Jupiter had crossed his ASC in March that year and by July was making a series of Oppositions to Bowie’s natal Moon-Saturn Conjunction, suggesting that keeping up the public persona of Ziggy had become frustrating, hard work and emotionally demanding hard work and Bowie felt the need to get out of the rut and expand his horizons.

"Thank You Very Much, Bye Bye, We Love You"

But the end of Ziggy was just the end of the start for Bowie and after many years, many albums and many personas later, Bowie has earned his status as a true legend. And now the Starman’s time on earth has come to an end, we can look up to the firmament and smile through our tears, for he has gone home.

“News guy wept and told us
earth was really dying
Cried so much his face was wet
then I knew he was not lying”

I have two great new astrology articles coming very soon, but in the meantime, some fiction.

As some of you know, as well as writing about astrology, I write short fiction under the name Mandi S. Lockley. Here’s one that was published in September 2015 in Mused Bella Online Literary Review, in which a young woman is inspired to question her lifestyle whilst watching a spider spin its intricate web.

Enjoy…

The Spider

Lonely, that’s how you’ll end up. Old and lonely.

His remark had reminded Louise of her mother’s reaction when she’d told her all those years ago that she never wanted to marry. Who would be a spinster by choice? she’d asked. The word spinster was loaded with shame and rejection and Louise wondered how many girls of her mother’s generation had condemned themselves to loveless marriages just to escape that tag. Not for the first time, Louise wondered if that was why her mother had married her father.

But it was the twenty-first century now. Independence was something to be proud of and being alone wasn’t the same as being lonely. Even so, James’ words and the memory of her mother’s insult had set her thinking about her life.

She poured herself a drink and took a long swig, as if the sweetness could rinse away the nasty taste the spinster word had left in her mouth. As she drank, she wandered into the lounge. West facing, it was always bright in the evenings during the summer. She opened the sliding glass door and sat down in the opening. The sun, low on the horizon, warmed her legs, which cast long shadows across the patio.

She noticed a grey spider dangling from a rhododendron bush. With the sun behind it, she could clearly make out its silky thread and the tiny hairs on its multiple legs. Louise smiled to herself. She recalled how, as a child, she’d been terrified of spiders, had screamed at the mere sight of one. Now she thought of them as friendly housemates helping to keep down the flies. Her fear had dissolved through necessity. Who else was going to remove a spider from the sink or chase one away from the bedroom ceiling in the middle of the night? Once, she had accidently drowned one in the bath and felt so bad she had made a spider ladder out of matchsticks and string and hung it over the bath taps.

She knew she should do some work. She had a lecture to rewrite and her students’ end of term papers needed marking, but she felt frozen on the spot, her attention captured by the suspended spider, her thoughts on James...

I'm proud to say that my article Whistleblowers at The Galactic Centre features in the Mar/Apr 2016 issue of the Journal of the Astrological Association of Great Britain. The cover, I'm sure you'll agree, is nothing short of beautiful and I'm thrilled to get a name check on it.

The article came out of research into the Galactic Centre done in collaboration with astrologers Rod Chang and Mechthild 'Nusse' Belton, over many fun and inspiring meetings that saw us finish off several bottles of wine and countless frothy coffees.

It postulates that the heart of our Milky Way galaxy, the Galactic Centre - a super-massive black hole (or a 'giant cosmic broom') positioned in late Sagittarius - plays a key role in chart signatures of people who spill the beans on organisations and governments, as the many famous cases in my article attests.

In this issue I find myself in very good company:

Priscilla Costello (Shakespeare 's hidden astro keys); Brian Clark (the 'night' approach); Sue Joseph Kientz ('new' Pluto); Frank C Clifford (durable couples); Marjorie Orr (Angela Merkel); Marcos Patchett (Rejection and other Reception variants); Sharon Knight (Astrologers' Feast of the Astrological Lodge of London and Astrologer of the Year at Gopal Bhattacharjee's fabulous conference in Kolkata [not forgetting Robert Currey's lifetime achievement award]); Smiljana Gavrancic (Paris atrocities and 21° Aquarius in France's chart); Christina Rodenbeck (David Bowie); Nicholas Kollerstrom (debunking French debunkers of Gauguelin's Mars Effect); Lucy Zolonga (Jup in Virgo solarscope); Pam Crane (astro crossword and the Dwad); Marion Williamson (Jo Logan remembered); Alex Trenoweth (Kolkata diary) ; Anne Whitaker (Age of Aquarius?); Roy Gillett (the enlightenment) and Sarah Cochrane (transits).

Thanks to Editor Victor Olliver for his fine work in putting together and publicising it.

Rod also has an article on the Galactic Centre in the current (Mar/Apr 2016) edition of Infinity (available from the same link as above) linking planetary transits to the Galactic Centre (GC) to the banking crisis of 2008, 9/11, the end of the Cold War and more.

What is also startling, is that like myself when I was researching the GC and whistleblowers, he has discovered that Mars seems to be an important factor in activating the energy of the GC and I suspect that exploring the significance of this observation will mean a few more vino and caffeine-fuelled meetings. The T-Square in the Aries Ingress Chart (& other thoughts)

The Sun is now settled in impulsive, pioneering, confrontational Aries, following its ingress on March 20th and the Astrological New Year has got off to what can only be described, unfortunately, as an explosive start.

The following article (with a few updates and additions) was first published in the March/April edition of Infinity Astrological Magazine.

Forget January 1st and its broken resolutions, the astrological year begins with the Sun’s ingress into Aries. It’s an Equinox, when day and night are in equal balance, and the start of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

The chart for the Aries ingress can be read as an overview of the year to come, symbolising trends in economics and politics, major events including crises and wars, social trends and natural phenomena such as the weather.

The most striking thing in this year’s Aries ingress chart is the on-going T-Square of Neptune in Pisces, Jupiter in Virgo and Saturn in Sagittarius. Venus joins the T-Square in a tight conjunction with Neptune; the Moon in Leo links in with a Trine to Saturn and Pluto forms an earth Trine with Jupiter.

The T-Square incorporates hard aspects of three important cycles: the waning Square of the 20 year Jupiter-Saturn cycle; the waning Square of the 36 year Saturn-Neptune cycle and the Opposition of the 13 year Jupiter-Neptune cycle.

That two of these cycles are in the waning Square phase highlights that we are in a period akin to the dark of the Moon. This means that, as the winding down of those two cycles begins, the themes and issues of those cycles (discussed below) feel more intense, more karmic and more exhausting as if we’re tired of the way things are and, craving a fresh start, we look forward to what the next cycle promises to offer. However, a start cannot be truly fresh unless we use the final quarter of the current cycle to commit ourselves to cleaning up the messes we have created since the cycle began. To do this we must accept that our mistakes were part of our learning curve and resolve to use the wisdom our experience has rewarded us with to do better next time.

In mundane astrology, the Jupiter-Saturn cycle is associated with the economic cycle and the current Square is the last in the cycle that began in 2000. This Square represents a final crisis point, when we are offered one last chance to clean up the financial messes we have made, and boy we have made a mess, and prepare a clean slate for the next cycle which begins at the end of 2020. One thing is clear, what we have created no longer works, so we must prepare new economic structures to carry us forward into the next cycle. But will we collectively learn from the mistakes of the past or simply carry on as usual?

The current Saturn Neptune cycle, which began in 1989, is also into its last set of Squares, with the next cycle beginning in 2026. This cycle symbolises how we collectively manifest our ideals, highlighting the gap between the ideal and reality, the conflict between what we wish for the world and the reality of what we have and fact and theory vs. what we feel and intuit. This Square represents a crisis point, where Neptune intensely challenges Saturn’s desire to maintain the status quo and the result can be crushed ideals, morals and disappointment and disillusionment in our institutions and traditions. We are at risk of falling for illusions, deceptions and propaganda, of giving in to paranoia (egged along by the media) or simply of dropping into escapism and trying to avoid reality altogether. Conversely, Saturn counter-challenges Neptune to ground its idealism in practical reality, to bring its dreams and high ideals down to earth. It’s an aspect that offers hope, even as it seems to mete out suffering.

The Conjunction of this current Saturn-Neptune cycle coincided with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the death throes of Communism. We have also seen the rise of capitalism to the point that democracy seems to have dissolved before our eyes (democracy defined as “governmentbythepeople;aformofgovernmentinwhichthesupremepowerisvestedinthepeopleandexerciseddirectlybythemorbytheirelectedagentsunderafreeelectoralsystem” 1 and we live in a world where election success is for sale and where the elite increasingly rule, protecting corporate interests and the elitist status quo ahead of the interests of the general electorate). But how can things change when most cannot imagine any other way of doing things? The astrology, however, tells us we must start to think differently, do things differently. But will we take heed or will we ignore reality and continue to put our faith in an outdated system. Do we have the imagination (Neptune) to manifest (Saturn) something different?

Also in the T-Square is the separating Opposition of Jupiter and Neptune. This 13 year cycle is associated with idealism, humanitarianism and ideology and during the Opposition the cycle’s issues become fully exposed and certainly we have seen religious and political ideological differences coming to a head in the conflict in Syria and Iraq with the resulting humanitarian refugee crisis overwhelming parts of Europe and the Middle East, as well as in the terrorist attacks occurring across the world.

Saturn, as the apex of the T-Square represents the status quo. It’s the laws of the land, state run businesses, the administration of Government, justice, order and business as usual. In Sagittarius, the status quo must respect moral principles, but of course when one country or faction’s moral principles differ from another’s what Saturn represents can become dogmatic, believing that its way is the only way and this is currently very obviously playing out on the world stage.

Venus in this T-Square highlights the potential for peace negotiations, but with the danger of lack of disclosure and disappointing results with its close Conjunction to Neptune. More optimistically, Venus Conjunct Neptune in Pisces suggests humanitarian efforts and compassion. However, the Square from Saturn suggests those efforts could be blocked or delayed, but also suggests the practical application of a realistic humanitarianism. Venus also represents financial matters and could point towards deceptions/frauds or other financial scandals such as the misuse of public funds, even as the powers that be (Saturn) insist on maintaining the status quo. It also suggests disappointing financial results, and slow economic growth despite optimistic forecasts. Austerity looks set to continue, fuelling the row between current leaders and political opposition which believes austerity is not working and is only creating unnecessary suffering for ordinary working people whilst the wealth gap continues to grow at an unprecedented rate.

Overall, this T-Square suggests political instability and a year when our collective faith in many things - society and its systems, the rightness of conflict, politics and religion - is set to be tested, but that there is always hope. With both the Jupiter-Saturn and Saturn-Neptune cycles in the last quadrature of their cycles, it’s time to set out our vision for the future. Saturnian hard work and pragmatism is what will manifest that vision ad the first step is perhaps letting go of the past, of the old way of doing things.

Moon Trine Saturn is about doing the right thing, carrying on with the normal routine, taking responsibility. The Moon in the context of mundane astrology refers to the general population as a whole, the consensus opinion. This Trine is hopeful, suggesting stability on a general day to day level for most people, but at worst, apathy and a too willing, unquestioning acceptance of the status quo. Pluto in Trine to Jupiter (along with Saturn’s placement in Sagittarius) suggests an ongoing preoccupation with international terrorism; with how money is made and distributed amongst the masses and with our collective belief systems.

There are of course, other important and relevant aspects in the Aries ingress chart, but for the sake of brevity this article is concentrated on the T-Square.

The Europe Union

Transiting Jupiter falls in the 2nd House of the chart for the EU, Saturn is in the 5th and the Venus-Neptune Conjunction in the 8th. The focus on the 2nd-8th axis means that money will continue to be the major theme and concern for the EU this coming year.
The 2nd represents currency so there will be further concern about the Euro and its value against other currencies and the 8th is about the deficit between public income and expenditure. Jupiter’s Opposition to Venus-Neptune falling across this axis is worrying and the Greek debt crisis will no doubt continue to dominate the EU agenda as the austerity measures demanded by the bailout continue to roll out against intense opposition from regular Greek citizens. The cost of the migrant crisis will also a continuing concern for the EU and the suggestion is that however much money is thrown at these problems it will not be enough, even as the appalling living conditions many migrants are suffering becomes more apparent and urgent.

Saturn in Sagittarius in the 5th doesn’t sound like there’s much fun to be had. Controls in individual self-expression such as freedom of speech on social media etc. are likely, maybe legislative controls, but also self censorship from fear of offending those who are ‘different’ from ourselves and of being publically shamed (usually online) for doing so. Will those fears put a dampener of old fashioned romance? While many young people might dream of a handsome stranger approaching them to tell them they fancy them, there’s a fine line these days between that and harassment! Cuts to arts and culture funding are likely and issues around children and birth-rates are also likely to be a focus, as well as regulatory issues around betting and gaming regulations.

Addition: Since writing this for Infinity Magazine back in February, on 22nd March, two days following the Aries ingress, Brussels suffered a horrific terrorist attack on its public transport network. The Aries ingress chart set for Brussels (see the outer wheel of the bi-wheel above) sees the two traditional malefics, Mars and Saturn, either side of the MC. Saturn is moving slowly and stations Retrograde on March 25th at 16 Sagittarius. Mars too will go retrograde in Sagittarius in mid April. Mars will not overtake Saturn in Sagittarius until late August, so these two planets will be running mates for some time to come (even though Mars will be back in Scorpio from late May to early August).

Sagittarius (internationalism) has been very strongly associated with international terrorism since Pluto’s journey through Sagittarius (9/11 etc.) and with Mars and Saturn concentrating their joint energy in this sign, themes that will play out include war, military action, the demand for retaliatory action. Simply put, there will be hell to pay, one way or another and the repercussions will be far reaching and longstanding.

A discussion between astrologers on social media also noted that the fixed star Antares is part of the Mars-Saturn picture. At 9 Sagittarius 46, Antares sits between Mars and Saturn in the Aries ingress chart and is conjunct the MC (the highest, most prominent/most publically obvious point of the chart and that which symbolises a country or entity’s leader/s).
Antares is associated with life and death experiences, extremism, obsession, ruthlessness and conflicts that are difficult, even impossible to resolve. Antares conjunct Mars and Saturn suggests increased danger, caused by ‘foreign’ aggressors but also by  leaders in government/police/military etc. Etymologically, Antares means anti-Mars, Mars’ rival, a rival in arms.

Mars finally catches up with Saturn on 24th August, following their respective retrogrades, at 9 Sagittarius 52, EXACT on Antares (9 Sagittarius 46), so this will be a date to watch.

The UK

The T-Square falls in the 3rd (Saturn), 5th (Neptune and Venus) and 12th (Jupiter) Houses of the UK Act of Union chart, with transiting Saturn Conjunct the UK’s natal Mercury. This puts the focus of the T-Square on transportation and communications, news, the media and education, as well as the UK’s relationship with its neighbouring countries (for example, expect to see the issue of the shockingly dismal migrant camps in Calais in the news again. Calais is a port in Northern France, just a very short sea journey from the English port of Dover and most if not all the migrants ended up in Calais because they wanted to try to get to the UK. However, the British Government have said it’s a French problem, that help from Britain would only encourage more migrants to Calais). The 3rd House also relates to local losses related to storms and this will be a big issue as the long clean up from this winter’s devastating flooding of homes and businesses across the North of England and Scotland continues. The question going forward is what systems (such as improved flood defences) will be put in place to prevent it happening again and who is responsible?
Neptune and Venus in the 5th suggests a general engagement in and expenditure on escapist activities, the distraction/pleasure of entertainment, sport, leisure and gambling. The Stock Market is also linked to this house (being based on speculation). Could we see a Stock Market Bubble, with certain stock prices rising to above their value and then crashing? That certainly fits the symbolism of the T-Square. The 5th is also concerned with children and their interests and also with Government representatives and ambassadors, so look out for news stories on those topics.
Neptune is just four degrees from the 6th House cusp (and Venus 5 degrees) so it is likely that health will continue to be a big issue. Perhaps the privatisation of the NHS by stealth will continue and at the time of writing junior doctors are involved in industrial action over changes to working contracts. This issue may drag on, with other health workers joining the dispute and/or we will see similar actions by other public sector workers and key service workers. The presence of Venus also suggests issues around occupations predominately carried out by females.
The 12th House stands for the nation’s secret enemies, its spies and its secret agenda, terrorist activities, hostage situations and crime in general. Will the UK see terror attacks on its soil? Let’s hope not, but it can’t be ruled out. It’s certain that behind the scenes covert operations will be going ahead to try to prevent terrorism, so we will see more and more stories appear in the media about attacks which have been averted, but the details will remain secret for reasons of national security. The 12th also of course rules prisons and hospitals and other places of confinement, so these will also come into focus in the coming 12 months.
Addition: since writing the original article in February, UK Prime Minister David Cameron has announced a referendum on whether Britain should remain in the European Union to be held on Thursday 23 June. The Moon (the general populous) for the day of the referendum falls in the 4th House, symbolising that voters will be considering issues of living conditions (what will improve ‘austerity Britain, being in our out of the EU) and other issues such as the escalating housing crisis. It also represents the ‘homeland’ and patriotism in general. Interestingly, the 4th House rules the opposition party in government (the opposition Labour party is officially in the ‘in’ camp). The Sun falls in the 9th House Conjunct Venus (which is 3 degrees from the MC).

The 9th House of course, is about foreigners and foreign lands, immigration, imports and exports and legal matters - all key issues in the political and media debate around whether or not the UK should exit the EU. It also reflects what the press think the public are interested in, but the Moon’s placement suggests that the populace’s main concerns lie closer to the bosom of their homes and that voters will be asking themselves what it means to be British as opposed to European.
The Sun and Venus falling in the 9th and near the MC says something about how the nation is perceived by other nations (in this case the EU) and certainly reflects how the UK is known as a centre for financial services (The City of London) and for the creative arts in general and the music and entertainment industries in particular.
How the referendum swings, I am not going to try to predict as it’s difficult not to be biased when I have my own views which I won’t share here.

The USA

The Sibley Chart puts the T-Square Saturn in the Ascendant, Venus-Neptune in the 3rd and Jupiter in the 9th.

Saturn just four degrees into the 1st House doesn’t suggest an optimistic outlook during this year when Obama will step down to make way for a new President. Amongst the top issues will be law enforcement, corporate interests, administrative prudence, homeland security and thrift. There will be much talk about taking responsibility and the prevailing attitude of the nation will be a conservative one.
With the 9th House impacted by Jupiter, immigration will continue to be an issue and a key one for the election, also foreign relations and internationalism in general, including foreign imports and exports and trade relations. Scandals will be played out in the media at home and abroad. Water related issues are suggested by Venus-Neptune in the 3rd, with potential problems around flooding, dams and travels on the high seas. The 3rd-9th axis also highlights education, all forms of communication and transportation and issues around the ecclesiastical and legal professions and the churches and courts in which they operate.

On a personal level, look at where the T-Square falls in your own chart, what planets and points it touches. Look back to the time of the Conjunction, 1st Square and Opposition of the current Saturn-Neptune and Jupiter-Saturn cycle and the Conjunction and 1st Square of the Jupiter-Neptune cycle to see if you can identify themes to help you get the big picture view of what those cycles mean to you personally.

And may you, and our world, grow, learn and develop into a better place, for the world is only as good as the sum total of the thoughts, words and actions of every one of us.

Whistleblowers at the Galactic Centre

$

At the heart of our galaxy, the Milky Way, is the Galactic Centre - a super-massive black hole (or a “giant cosmic broom”) positioned in late Sagittarius – which plays a key role in chart signatures of people who spill the beans on organisations and governments, as many famous cases attest.

A whistleblower is a person “who exposes misconduct, alleged dishonest or illegal activity occurring in an organisation. The alleged misconduct may be…a violation of a law, rule, regulation and/or a direct threat to public interest, such as fraud, health and safety violations, and corruption. Whistleblowers may make their allegations internally (…to other people within the accused organisation) or externally (to regulators, law enforcement agencies, to the media…). Whistleblowers frequently face reprisal, sometimes at the hands of the organisation or group which they have accused, sometimes from related organisations, and sometimes under law”.

Research into the most infamous and noteworthy whistleblowers shows that the majority of them have planets and points in their natal charts which connect to the Galactic Centre (GC), the black hole at the centre of our Milky Way galaxy. This can’t be a surprise because Sagittarius, seeker of truth, guardian of the moral high ground and the sign the GC falls in, is surely a most appropriate signature for the whistleblower. It would seem, as the case studies will show, that individuals whose charts connect strongly to the Galactic Centre (GC) can have an impact on the world that reaches far beyond the personal when given access to information that others would prefer to keep hidden and when they have the means and motivation to share that information on a huge scale...
